Expectations

It was a sultry and sunny summer evening with the golden-hour glow upon us. The family I was photographing this particular evening agreed to have their family photo shoot at the location I mentioned. The fun scenes I envisioned were intriguing me — so I mentioned the BWI [aka: Thomas A. Dixon, Jr.] aircraft observation area that also boasts a playground, a gondola, and a portion of the BWI bike trail.

I was rather excited about this location for still photos. You see, I love thinking outside the box. I enjoy stretching myself and even praying that God will impart unique creatively into my thinking while I am snapping either His creation, and most recently — precious families (or singles / individuals or couples!).

One of the components in this photo shoot involved hoping I would be able to include their four year old son in scenes with commercial aircraft landing in the background. I mean, how epic!

Well, the evening of the shoot, my husband and I planned to arrive at the location early so that I could begin practicing this type of photography. However, lo and behold, we quickly learned the aircraft were not landing from the south — instead they were taking off and heading south (thereby gaining altitude fast!). The flight pattern remained this way all evening.

Thankfully, periodically throughout the earlier moments of the day, I was mentally coaching myself to be aware of my expectations for this photo shoot I envisioned. All of us know that disappointments happen often in life due to unmet expectations

Oh wait! As circumstances would have it -- the Kline family and I eventually observed a small hill. At this point in the evening, I had snapped nearly 100 photos from various scenes at this location. It sounds laborious, however quite the contrary! Photo shoots are fun! Now, back to the small hill -- there was something distinctive about it. Logan eventually started running up and down the hill. I decided to sit on the curb and started clicking the camera again.

Due to the dusk lighting and the [approximately] 25° angle of my camera upwards along the small hill line (meaning the sky was prominent for exposure elements) -- silhouette pictures were inevitable. I’ve always loved silhouettes! So, I just kept snapping!

If you’d like to view the results, please visit the gallery at my photography website — https://selah.photography -- and yes! Two of the shots included an aircraft in the background.

Are you ready to book a Photography For A Cause shoot with me? I wonder where I can venture to next to stretch my photography and creativity? I am ready to find out, so let’s do this!
